MANAGING DIRECTOR OF REMASAB HOLDS STRATEGIC MEETING WITH PRIVATE SECTOR PARTICIPANTS ON REVIEW OF FRANCHISE AGREEMENTS

On 27th September 2025, the Managing Director of the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) convened a strategic meeting with Private Sector Participants (PSPs) to deliberate on the review of existing Franchise Agreements governing waste management services across Kano State. The engagement formed part of the Board’s ongoing efforts to strengthen public-private partnerships and enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and effectiveness of waste management operations.

The meeting featured observations and recommendations from the Chairman of the Kano Indigenous Waste Management Association (KIWMA), with discussions focusing on key policy and operational issues, including the adoption of appropriate waste management technologies, the percentage monetization of gross revenue, payment of service fees, and the need to streamline service charges to eliminate duplication and improve operational efficiency. Participants also exchanged views on measures to strengthen the regulatory framework, improve compliance, and create a more enabling environment for private sector participation in waste management.

The engagement provided a valuable platform for constructive dialogue between REMASAB and its private sector partners, identifying priority areas for improving the existing franchise framework and promoting sustainable, transparent, and business-friendly waste management practices. It also laid the foundation for the review of franchise agreements, encouraged investment in modern waste management technologies, enhanced operational accountability, and reinforced the shared commitment to improving service delivery across Kano State.

The Managing Director reaffirmed REMASAB’s commitment to fostering strong partnerships with private sector operators in line with the visionary leadership of Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf of building an efficient, innovative, and environmentally sustainable waste management system that delivers lasting benefits to residents across the State.
