On 25th August 2025, the Managing Director of the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) Dr. Muhammad S. Khalil hosted private waste management partners at the Board’s Headquarters for a strategic engagement aimed at strengthening collaboration and improving the delivery of waste management services across Kano State.

During the meeting, the private operators presented a position paper outlining key operational issues affecting service delivery. Discussions focused on compliance with regulatory requirements, outstanding debts and financial obligations, contractual commitments, the implementation of existing franchise agreements, and mechanisms for enhancing operational performance. The meeting also deliberated on the continued engagement of service providers, possible disengagement of non-performing operators, and the review of franchise arrangements to ensure greater efficiency, accountability, and sustainability within the sector.

The engagement provided a valuable platform for open and constructive dialogue between REMASAB and its private sector partners, identifying priority areas for improved compliance, transparency, and operational accountability. It also reinforced the shared commitment of both parties to fulfilling contractual obligations, initiated the process for reviewing franchise agreements to enhance service delivery, and reaffirmed the importance of strong public-private partnerships in achieving an efficient and sustainable waste management system.

The Managing Director reiterated REMASAB’s commitment to fostering collaborative partnerships built on professionalism, accountability, and shared responsibility in line with the Kano State Government’s vision of a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally sustainable Kano State.
